Parasitic skin infection has reached epidemic level, Dermatologists warn
Dermatologists warn that a parasitic infection, named taeniasis, caused by tapeworm, is spreading across the country and that it has reached the level of an epidemic.
While the symptoms can occur in any part of the body, it is mainly found in areas more exposed to sweat and on the head.
Consultant dermatologist, Dr Janaka Akarawita said that the infection can spread from touch.
“This can spread rapidly among those who work together or among family members,” he said.
He also urged people not to use balms and creams without medical consultation and there are less than 10 drugs in the country that are effective against taeniasis.
