The Local, Provincial Councils and Parliamentary Elections Acts would be amended to incorporate a provision that requires candidates elected on the first-past-the-post (FPP) system to constitute 60% of all elected bodies while the balance 40% will be elected on proportional representation (PR), the government said yesterday.

The UNP-SLFP led National Unity Government earlier announced that due to representations made by some political parties, the allocation of seats in the various bodies under the new mixed electoral system would be implemented on a 50:50 basis.

But Local Government and Provincial Councils Minister Faiszer Musthapha said yesterday that FPP to PR ratio would be 60:40 for all elections.

"We will be amending the Local, Provincial and Parliamentary Elections Acts to reflect the new equation on which seats would be apportioned," he said.
