Colombo District UNP MP Sujeewa Senasinghe campaigning in the Hambantota District for the March 29 SPC polls said that Sri Lanka’s economy was heading for disaster and would be similar to that of North Korea very soon.

He said the poor in Hambantota had revealed their difficulties in having a proper meal a day. He said most of them ate roti for lunch and papaw for dinner and eating a plate of rice for the day was a luxury for them.

The people had borne the brunt of the economic mess that the UPFA government had brought upon the country. Generations to come would have to repay loans taken from China at massive interest rates and future governments would not be in a position to deliver the country from the debt trap. At the end of the day it would be the poor people who suffered, Senasinghe said.

The parliamentarian said the government henchmen were lining their pockets at the expense of the public, while the ordinary folks were made to suffer. He questioned why certain international schools had been exempted from taxes, while pharmaceuticals, books and various other essential items like food stuff were heavily taxed. He said casinos were also exempted from tax, while there were no tax holidays given to small entrepreneurs.

Saying that India was making its own cars and motorcycles of international repute, MP Senasinghe asked why Sri Lanka could not do the same.

He said that the tax on a tractor needed by poor farmers had been increased in the Budget by Rs. 200,000.

The Hambantota Port had brought in only Rs. 400 million in four years as stated by the Project Minister of Highways, Ports and Shipping Rohitha Abeygunawardena in Parliament, while the same was the income earned by the Mattala International Airport for four years built at a cost of Rs. 250 billion. Minister of Power and Energy Pavithra Wanniarachchi had said in Parliament that Rs. 60 million per month was needed to hire vehicles for the CEB, MP Senasinghe said, urging the people to help the UNP form a government so that they would be delivered from their suffering.
