Salt in Norochcholai condenser: Sabotage not ruled out

By Ifham Nizam

Some senior officials of the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) yesterday refused to rule out the possibility of sabotage at the first coal-fired power plant at Norochcholai. Attempts being made to shelve the findings of a recent investigation into how salt had been found in a condenser indicated that the CEB top management was trying to hide something, they said.

Following the initial inquiries, a high level investigation had been conducted by the CEB besides a probe by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), a top official said.

CEB General Manager, Senior Engineer Shavindranath Fernando told The Island that he was not in a position to say how long the CID probe would take but the CEB probe was on.

However, Fernando declined to comment on the findings of the initial investigation. A copy of the probe report was handed over to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) for a separate probe, according to sources.

Assistant General Manager G.S. Perera and Deputy General Manager S.C.W. Gunawardena conducted the initial investigation.
