A Sri Lankan woman believed to be oldest in Asia died last week at the age of 117 years.


Ukku Amma died in her native village of Hemmathagama in Mawanella.


Born on October 22, 1897, she was the mother of seven children. She had 98 great-great-grandchildren.Ukku Amma’s husband, Bandiya had died six years ago at the age of 111 years.


According to the Guinness World Records, a Japanese man was the world’s oldest living person, and the longest-lived man in recorded history.


He died in 2013 at the age of 116 at a hospital near the city of Kyoto.


Jiroemon Kimura, a retired postal worker, born in 1897, worked before World War II in what was then the Japanese colony of Korea, died of natural causes in the city of Kyotango.
