Second LT. killed in clash between two villages

An second lieutenant in the Army was killed and two others were seriously injured in a long standing dispute between two groups at Ahangama, in the Galle district, on Saturday night.

Following the clash between the two groups from Dikkumbura and Atanikitha, the body of Second Lt. Bopagoda Hettige Suranga Janaka Sampath (24) was found in a marsh close to Ahangama – Atanakitha road. His motorcycle too was found near by. He was a resident of Imaduwa, Kodagoda.

According to police, the rivalry between the two groups had been going on for years and the latest clash had occurred due to a challenge thrown by a person from Atanakitha. Accepting that challenge the army officer, who had come home on leave, accompanied by nine others had gone from Dikkaumbura to Atanakitha on ten motorcycles and the clash had taken place.

Prior to the killing, a house at Atanakitha had been attacked. Police suspect that attack had been carried out by the group that came from Dikkumbura.
