There are 38 small bridges and culverts in Horana and another 16 in Ingiriya which are all in a damaged state due to lack of proper maintenance.
Some of the bridges have been built using discarded rails and some others were improvised using wooden logs.
Some of them come under the purview of Provincial Road Development Authority and others under the Highways Department.
The residents complain that bridges at Millewa, Miriswatte, Kahatapitiya, Kananwila, Hanweligoda, Kirigala and Meegentara are too narrow and sans railings.
They pointed out that the bridges at Dehigaspitiya, Kandanapitiya, Katugalgama shoe bridge, Pelpitagama, Puhuwala, Menerigama and Kanadanapitiya need urgent repairs.
Although these issues have been raised at the monthly meetings of the Horana Divisional Secretariat they have been confined to proposals due to lack of funds, Pradeshiya Sabha members say.
The villagers have to face severe hardships to transport their produce due to this problem.
