Naval deployment Nachchikuda commissioned as SLNS Buwaneka


SLNS Buwaneka, the Naval base located at Mulankavil in Kilinochchi district, was commissioned by the Commander of Sri Lanka Navy Vice Admiral Somathilake Dissanayake on March 12 (Monday).


Commander North-central Naval area Rear Admiral Rohan Amarasinghe and senior Naval Officers attached to Northern Headquarters along with naval personnel of the North-central Naval Command were present at the occasion.


In keeping with traditional Naval customs, Commander of the Navy, handed over the commissioning warrant to the Commanding Officer of SLNS Buwaneka Commander, K. S. Dissanayake. The Commissioning Warrant was read by the Commanding Officer followed by hoisting of the Commissioning Pennant.


Religious dignitaries representing Buddhist, Hindu, Christian and Islamic faiths bestowed their blessings on the newly commissioned Naval base.


This was established under the direction of the Ministry of Defence. The Naval deployment was ceremonially opened on August 25, 2011 by Defence Secretary, Gotabaya Rajapaksa as Naval Deployment Nachchikuda. This comes under the North-central Naval Command and provides security to North-western coastal belt, civilians in Vedittaltivu, Illuppakadawai, Waleipadu and Devils Point.


It also functions as deterrence against smuggling of drugs and contraband by sea and assists law-enforcement authorities to maintain law and order in the area.
