President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has asked the Central Bank to provide relief to depositors of ETI Finance and The Finance Company after seeking legal advice within 24 hours.

President Rajapaksa also said that a committee, consisting of representatives from the Presidential Secretariat, CBSL and the Treasury, should be appointed to monitor the future course of action.

The President said so during a meeting at the Presidential Secretariat, yesterday. During the meeting, steps that had been taken by the CB to assist these depositors were discussed.

Currently, those who have deposited less than Rs. 600, 000 are being paid by the CBSL.

Rajapaksa said that the others too should be paid even if that meant repossessing the assets of the two companies.

CBSL Governor Prof. W.D. Lakshman has promised to take up the matter at the next Monetary Board meeting.
