Students ask govt. not to extend their internship

National Diploma in Teaching

By M.A. Kaleel

Around 5000 Students following the three year National Diploma in Teaching courses at 19 National Colleges of Education have requested the Ministry of Education not to extend their one-year school internship which fell short by two months due to the coronavirus outbreak.

They say if the internship is extended by one or two months when schools reopen, they will not be able to find accommodation for a short period and the landlords will be reluctant to rent out accommodations for students from faraway districts for fear of coronavirus spread. They maintain they were coached online during the school closure to complete the required areas of work and they have therefore completed the task.

Chief Secretary of Ceylon Teachers Service Union Mahinda Jayasinghe has requested a meeting with Education Minister Dullas Alahapperuma to discuss the matter.
