Importing beedi leaves as yarn: BOI clarifies

Apropos our news report headlined "BOI firm imports beedi leaf as yarn published in last Friday’s edition of The Island, the Board of Investment has sent the following reply:

The BOI categorically states that no illegal importation has been done by any BOI registered company. No Import CUSDEC (Customs Declaration) relating to this transaction has been raised by a BOI enterprise, approved nor verified by the Investor Services Department of the BOI Katunayaka Export Processing Zone (KEPZ).

The BOI also said during the preliminary investigation it appears that a third party has fraudulently used the name of a BOI enterprise as the intended consignee without the knowledge of the enterprise. Further investigations are being carried out by the Sri Lanka Customs and authorities in this regard.

BOI Senior Deputy Director – Media, Jagath de Silva said that the enterprise has not submitted such import CUSDEC to clear the cargo and BOI has not approved any import CUSDECs in this regard. ASYCUDA computer system has a facility to inform importer or exporter by creating a system generated mail or SMS alert when CUSDECs are approved by the BOI if enterprises are registered for this facility in the system. .

As an additional step, BOI is in the process of introducing an automated validating system for the BOI enterprises to confirm the credibility when Import and Export CUSDECs are submitted to the Investor Services Department of BOI.
