Dissolution of parliament challenged through rights violation petition

UNP General Secretary, Akila Viraj Kariyawasam, has filed a Fundamental Rights violation petition, in the Supreme Court, seeking a declaration that the dissolution of the eighth parliament, through a proclamation by the President, infringes on the Constitution as the new Parliament cannot meet by June 2.

This petition has been filed through Attorney-at-law Dinesh Vidanapathirana, naming the Attorney General as respondent, on behalf of the President.

The petitioner is also seeking an interim order staying the operation and effect of the dissolution of the eighth parliament through a proclamation published in a gazette notification, dated March 2, 2020.
