Developed countries had not been able to tackle COVID-19 effectively because they left that task exclusively in the hands of the health sector, Defence Secretary, Maj. Gen. Kamal Gunarathne, said yesterday.

In Sri Lanka health officials worked closely with security and intelligence officials, he said.

"If we try to play catch up with the coronavirus, we will lose. We have to anticipate what might happen and be ready, and I think we were successful in that."

Gunarathne said that when it was reported that a pastor, who had contracted COVID-19 was in Jaffna, intelligence officials identified everyone who had been in contact with him. "Thus, a calamity was averted," he said.
