‘Lovers Quarrel’joins list of postponed Big Matches

Southern Province’s second oldest Big Match, the ‘Lovers Quarrel’ was postponed until further notice. The 115th edition of the Big Match between arch-rivals Richmond and Mahinda Colleges was to be staged on the April 3 and 4 at the Galle International Stadium.

An official of Mahinda College said that the Principals of the two schools have taken the decision to postpone the annual encounter without calling a Joint Committee Meeting due to endemic Covid 19 epidemic.

"The two principals had telephone conversations with the secretaries of the Old Boys Unions and the secretaries of the Schools Development Committees before arriving at the decision. They have decided to postpone the match until further notice," said the official.

The Richmond - Mahinda encounter is the latest Big Match to be hampered by the current epidemic situation.

The Battle of the Blues of Matara between St. Thomas’ and St. Servatius was postponed last week to join a host of others.

Except the organizers of the Royal-Thomian, the Battle of the Rocks (Maliyadeva-St. Anne’s) and the Battle of the Golds Uva (Bandarawela Central-St. Joseph’s), all other Big Matches scheduled to commence on March 12 or after were postponed.

The historic Royal-Thomian encounter had already started when the government decided to advance school holidays to prevent the spread of the disease.

The organizers of the encounters between St. Sebastian’s and Prince of Wales, Moratuwa, Trinity and St. Anthony’s, Kandy and St. Sylvester’s and Vidyartha took difficult decisions to postpone their Big Matches on March 12, the eve of the start of their matches, following government request.

Kandy’s Kingswood-Dharmaraja and many others followed suit later.

The matches of the premier Schools Under-19 cricket tournament, which was reaching the business end too have been postponed indefinitely. (RF)
