Champika, Ganesan, Hakeem pledge support to new political alliance under Sajith

The Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU), the Tamil Progressive Alliance (TPA) and the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) yesterday pledged their support to the new political alliance to be formed under the leadership of Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa.

In a joint statement, JHU General Secretary Patali Champika Ranawaka, TPA Leader Mano Ganesan and SLMC Leader Rauff Hakeem say they will join hands with the "broad people’s alliance" that will be formed under Premadasa to contest the next general election.

The alliance will work together to defeat the incumbent government which has shown that it is incapable of carrying out any of their election promises.

A UNP Working Committee meeting, which was to be held today to iron out some of the issues regarding the alliance under Premadasa, was postponed until Monday.

The delay follows the demand of alliance members that the general secretary of the alliance be given the authority to certify the lists of candidates contesting under the elephant symbol. They have made this demand after UNP general secretary Akila Viraj insists that the elephant should be the symbol of the alliance.
