A Buddhist monk was killed when a police revolver misfired in Hungama yesterday during a brawl between some policemen and a civilian.

The deceased was identified as Ven Hathagala Seelarathana (21) of Hathagala Temple Deniyaya Road, Hungama.

Ven. Seelarathana and three other bhikkhus were travelling in a van to their temple from an almsgiving when they saw a brawl between some policemen and a civilian, who was later identified as an underworld figure.

The police on patrol had noticed a suspect rider and ordered him to stop. As the motorcyclist sped without complying with the order the policemen gave chase. When the police intercepted him the suspect started fighting with them. Several vehicles including the cab transporting the bhikkhu had to stop due to the brawl.

In the melee a revolver of one of the policemen misfired, fatally injuring Ven. Seelararathana. He was rushed to the Angunakolapelessa hospital but was declared dead on admission.

Hungama police said that they had nabbed a wanted criminal for drug-related offences and were in the process of arresting him when the unfortunate incident happened.

Further investigations were in progress under the supervision of Tangalle ASP 2 Ratnaweera L Adassuriya.
