Coaches including South Asian Games medal producers hailed the ‘Microcycle Construction Workshop conducted by world renowned coach educator Gunter Lange as a ‘golden opportunity’ given to them to gain knowledge.

The six-day workshop conducted at the Teacher Resources Centre, Kalegana, Galle was organised by the Sri Lanka Schools Athletics Association.

"There is little opportunity for coaches to gain knowledge in Sri Lanka. Coaches gain new knowledge either through their seniors or through internet. This was an invaluable opportunity. It was very valuable in preparing schools athletes to the next level and to understand how to lay the base with a long term plan in mind," said veteran coach Lakshman Hapuarachchi.

Sanjeewa Weerakkody, the coach of South Asian Games medalist Amasha de Silva was optimistic that the new knowledge gained at the workshop would help coaches produce medals at the Asian level.

"The knowledge gained at this workshop is invaluable. I am optimistic that we could produce medals at the next Asian Championships and Asian Games," said Weerakkody.

The Sri Lanka Schools Athletics Association conducted several courses for schools coaches during the last couple of years.

Senior lecturer Veeramani Chidambaram, who was also here on the invitation of SLSAA last year partnered Gunter Lange to conduct the workshop which concluded on Saturday.

SLSAA treasurer Jayalal Ratnasuriya, who himself a coach educator here, played a key role in arranging the workshop with President Upali Amaratunga and Secretary Neville Rodrigo going out of their way in supporting.

Gunter Lange who has also provided his expertise as national coach of several countries, lectured on designing microcycles in different phases of the training year during the first phase of the workshop. During the last four days the participants constructed in groups their own ‘microcycles’ with the use of a ‘puzzle’ introduced by Gunter who together with Chidambaram later analyzed and scrutinized them.
