Polls monitors identify potential hotspot in East, receive over 103 complaints

Campaign for Free and Fair Elections (CaFFE) had received 103 complaints by yesterday morning and these included 96 submitted on the day of nominations, CaFFE Director, Surangi Ariyawansha said.

She said that there were a lot of illegal election propaganda materials displayed around the country and most of those were in support of the three main candidates.

"We received complaints about a large number of massive cutouts congratulating some candidates. We have informed the National Election Commission (NEC) of them," she said.

CaFFE has also identified Sainthamaruthu in Ampara as hotspot after the Chairman of the Sainthamaruthu Jumma Mosque instructed the people in the area to work against Sajith Premadasa, who is supported by the SLMC.

"The power exerted by the Sainthamaruthu Jumma Mosque is great. During the 2018 local council election it fielded an independent group and urged the people to boycott other parties. The independent group that contested with the blessings of the Sainthamaruthu Jumma Mosque won all the wards there. However, we don’t think this will go unchallenged, this time around. Therefore Sainthamaruthu is definitely a hotspot," Ariyawansha said.
