CPA challenging President Sirisena’s pardon of Gnanasara Thera fixed for support

The Supreme Court, yesterday, fixed for support, on December 5, 2019, an application filed by the Centre for Policy Alternatives and its Director Paikiasothy Saravanamuttu, challenging the presidential pardon, granted to the Venerable Gnanasara thera, convicted of contempt of court, for disturbing the proceedings of the Homagama Magistrate’s Court during the hearing of the case in respect of the disappearance of Pradeep Ekneligoda.


The Magistrate of Homagama had complained to the Court of Appeal against the Thera. The Court of Appeal found Gnanasara thera guilty of contempt. The Thera appealed to the Supreme Court and that court upheld the conviction. He was sentenced to a prison term. The President pardoned and released him.
