Education Ministry to enhance students’ English proficiency

Education Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam, recently, said steps should be taken to improve the students knowledge of English if the country was to reach global standards.

Kariyawasam said a circular had been issued to teachers on how best English could be taught to students via the curriculum given by the National Institute of Education.

The instruction manual had proposed an "English Communication Day" once a week in all government schools to help students communicate effectively in English.

The Education Department and the respective Zonal Educational Offices had conducted a survey in schools during the last few years and identified certain areas in teaching English that needed to be improved and now the Education Department would take remedial measures to overcome those problems, the Minister said.

There were also proposals for the Examinations Department, National Institute of Education and Educational Publications Department to work jointly and prepare curricula to prepare students to sit examinations confidently.

A programme had also been introduced in all provinces to train students in speech and listening under the supervision of a board comprising officials of the Examinations Department, the National Education Institute, the Colleges of Education and instructors from Britain and New Zealand. Findings had been made available to all provinces, the Minister said, adding that the system had been introduced to all schools in the provinces.
