Landslide warnings in several areas

A landslide warning has been issued for a number of areas in the Central Province by the National Building Research Organisation (NBRO) due to the heavy rains of over 75 millimetres in these areas.

Those who live near mountains, man-made cut slopes and roads within the Ambagamuwa, Kotmale, and Nuwara Eliya divisional secretariats have been asked to be vigilant and to move away from areas if they notice any pre-landslide signs. These signs include cracks on the ground, floors and walls of buildings which are built on slopes, slanting of trees, electrical posts, fences and telephone posts and appearance of water from the ground or disappearance of existing springs. Meanwhile, the Meteorological Department has also predicted heavy rains of more than 150 mm in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, Southern, and North Western Provinces.

Those living in Ratnapura have been asked to be vigilant due to heavy rains in the catchment area of the Kalu River. The water level of the river is increasing rapidly due to the heavy rains, the Irrigation Department said. Moreover those living in Thawalama have to be vigilant as the water level of the

Gin River is increasing rapidly due to the heavy rains. "Moreover everyone living near these two rivers or its subsidiaries must be careful", it said.
