Adverse weather warning extended till 11 am today

The Met Department has warned those living in coastal areas to be vigilant as there could be a significant increase in wind speeds across seven provinces until 11 am today (14.)

It says that wind speeds are expected to reach between 70 - 80 kmph in the Western, Southern, Sabaragamuwa, North Central, North Western, Northern, and Central Provinces and the Trincomalee district.

Showers or thundershowers are also expected to occur in Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, Southern and North-western provinces. Heavy falls above 100 mm are likely at some places in Central and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in Galle and Kalutara districts.

Meanwhile rains up to 75 mm are likely at certain areas in North-western province and in Colombo, Gampaha, Matara and Hambantota districts. Light showers may occur in Mannar and Anuradhapura districts.

General public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by lightning. Met Department also urged the public to remain cautious of fallen trees and power lines. "Unattached metal sheets could also be blown off due to the heavy winds while thatched houses too could be vulnerable to damages.

Meanwhile showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the sea area extending from Puttalam to Hambantota via Galle. There is a high possibility for sudden increase of wind speed up to (70-80) kmph and seas can be rough in the sea areas extending from Pottuvil to Trincomalee via Hambanthota, Colombo, Puttalam and Kankesanturai.

Fishermen are informed that it is dangerous to venture into the above Sea areas.
