The Supreme Court has asked the Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) to submit written submissions, if any, regarding President Maithripala Sirisena’s request that the court determine whether Provincial Council elections could be held as the delimitation committee report has not been approved.

The SC has asked BASL to submit necessary documents by August 21 and stated that the BASL members could make written submissions.

The President wants to ascertain from the Supreme Court whether the PC polls could be held under the former Proportional Representation System after gazetting of the Delimitation Report. The Delimitation Committee report was earlier rejected unanimously by MPs and the proposal for holding Provincial Council elections under a new mixed electoral system of first past the post and PR is now on hold.

The Supreme Court will start hearing the case on August 23 and its determination will be sent to the President by August 30.
