Ministry of Post, Postal Services and Muslim Religious Affairs, M. H. A. Haleem will hold discussions with Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe today on the trade union action of postal workers.

The postal unions commenced a one-day strike from midnight yesterday over a number of issues. Haleem urged the unions to suspend the strike given that solutions to their issues would be provided after the discussion with the Prime Minister.

Postal workers at the Central Mail Exchange last week conduced a 48-hour strike, which led to a large backlog of letters, estimated to be about two million. They called off the strike after Minister Haleem gave a written assurance to consider trade union demands. However union’s said that the Cabinet had not approved a proposal on recruitment.
