Police shot dead a member of the Aava Group, when he allegedly attempted to attack them with a sword, on Saturday night at Manipai, Jaffna. That was the first time that the police used lethal force on Aava Group members.

Having received information that members of the Aava Group had planned to attack a house at Inuvil, Manipai, the police placed a road block in the area and started checking vehicles and individuals when a group of young men arrived there around 8.45 pm.

When the policemen tried to search them, the suspect attempted to attack the policemen with a sword. The police opened fire in self defence and one Aava group member was shot dead. The others fled the scene. Police took into custody a motorcycle and three swords that the Aava group members had left behind.

The deceased was masked. Police have identified the deceased Selvarathnam Kavigajan,22, a resident of Kodikamam. Police say that there were six Aava group members when the incident occurred and that another one of them was injured.

Police have launched a search operation to arrest those who fled.
