Cabinet approves President’s proposal to amend Uniform Ordinance

The Cabinet of Ministers on Friday approved a proposal presented by President Maithripala Sirisena, in his capacity as the Minister of Defence, to repeal the Uniform Ordinance No. 6 of 1895 and to draft a new bill concerning uniforms.

The President told the Cabinet that the Uniform Ordinance was an attempt to limit civilians wearing clothes similar to military uniforms. However there was a trend of persons having clothes that were similar to military uniforms and wearing garments that were similar to army’s jungle fatigues.

Since that had a direct impact on national security the Uniform Ordinance had to be amended to suit the present context and demands. Thus the President proposed to repeal the Uniform Ordinance and to draft a new act.
