NPC Minister sacked for corruption talks of virtues of Prabhakaran

The only person that the Tamil people had accepted as a national leader was the late LTTE leader, Velupillai Prabhakaran, former Provincial Minister of Agriculture of the Northern Province, P. Ayngaranesan told media in Jaffna yesterday.

Ayngaranesan said so in response to a statement made by State Minister of Education, Vijayakala Maheswaran that Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe was the only national leader acceptable to the Sinhala and Tamil communities.

"There are many political parties and these parties have leaders. We can’t call these people national leaders. Since Independence there have been many politicians, from D.S. Senanayake to Maithripala Sirisena. If any of them had found a solution to the ethnic issue faced by the Tamil community, we would have recognised that person as a national leader."

The former NPC Minister added that for the Tamils on Prabhakaran was the true national leader. Prabhakaran had never thought of becoming the head of the province, he added. "If he had wanted to do so, he would have been the first Chief Minister of the North."

Ayngaranesan, who was appointed the Minister of Agriculture at Northern Province in 2013, was asked to resign by Chief Minister C.V. Vigneswaran in 2017 after a three-member committee, appointed to investigate charges of corruption, abuse of power and misuse of funds levelled against Ayngaranesan and fellow minister T. Kurukularajah, found evidence against him.
