Schools athletes shine at Western Province Athletics Championship

Dananjaya, Pulwansa best athletes


Long jumpers Shreshan Dananjaya and Anjani Pulwansa were adjudged the best athletes of the meet. While Dananjaya cleared 7.57 metres in the men’s event, Pulwansa registered a feat of 5.92 metres.


Schools athletes had a notable share of medals in track events at the Western Province Athletics Championship which concluded at the Sugathadasa Stadium on Sunday. How much the leading Province of the country was dependent on schools structure for its track and field survival was very much evident in sprint and middle distance events.


There was an Under-16 age category competition to promote and encourage track and field sports at schools level during this two-day meet, but even in the senior category schools athletes won a great deal of podium places.


The men’s 100 metres, women’s 200 metres, women’s 400 metres and the women’s 800 metres and the 1500 metres were all won by school athletes.


Sahan Thenuka Rajapaksa of St. Benedict’s was the fastest man as he clocked 10.5 seconds to win the men’s 100 metres.


In the women’s 400 metres it was school athlete Sayuri Lakshima who clinched the title as she clocked 58.6 seconds to win.


Women’s 800 metres and 1500 metres were both won by Shanika Lakshani of Holy Cross College, Gampaha.


Sadeepa Hernderson of Gateway College was the winner of the women’s 200 metres. A clean sweep of the sprint double by the school athlete was prevented by Sarangi Silva (gold) and Lakshika Sugandi who shared the gold and silver. There, Henderson was placed third.
