by Chitra Weerarathne

A petition filed by the Centre for Policy Alternatives and its Executive Director Dr. P. Saravanamuttu challenging the presidential pardon given to the Ven. Galagodaatte Gnanasara Thera will be next called before the Supreme Court on 10 Sept.

The petitioner has said that the Thera was convicted of contempt of court for having disturbed the proceedings of the Homagama Magistrate’s Court during the trial in respect of the disappearance of Pradeep Ekneligoda. The release of the Thera was an affront to the dignity of the court.

The conviction of contempt of the Thera was declared first by the Court of Appeal and affirmed by the Supreme Court.

Pradeep Ekneligoda’s wife Sandya too has filed a similar petition against the pardoning of the Thera. That petition too will be called before the court on 10 Sept.

The Supreme Court bench of yesterday comprised Justice Buwaneka Aluwihare, Justice Prasanna Jayawardena and Justice L.T.B. Dehideniya.
