Cabinet nod for introducing draconian press laws


The Cabinet of Ministers yesterday approved a proposal made by the acting minister of justice, Ranjith Maddumabandara to amend the Penal Code and Criminal Procedure Code allowing the government to take legal action against those who publish what the government calls fake news that adversely affected reconciliation and national security.

Maddumabandara made this request based on a recommendation by the sectoral Oversight Committee on National Security.

A person found guilty of the charge could be fined up to Rs. 1 million or sentenced to a prison term of up to five years.
