Attacks during curfew

The premier Muslim clergy body, the All Ceylon Jamiyyathul Ulma (ACJU), expressing concern over the death reported due to mob attacks on mainly mosques and Muslim business establishments in the North Western province, said they requested the government to restore law and order.

ACJU Media Secretary Ash Sheikh Fazil Farook said laws should be enforced strictly against those involved in attacks on mosques, properties.

Another Moulavi said that they were doing their utmost to wipe out the radical elements in the Muslim society. "We appreciate the cooperation of the security forces and Police in this regard," he added.

Muslims also said that some of the mob attacks were reported after curfew was imposed and if so the relevant authorities should be held responsible.

The TNA has strongly condemned the attacks on Muslim homes, businesses and mosques over the last two days. "We strongly condemn such violence and call on the authorities to take swift and severe action against the perpetrators," TNA Spokesman parliamentarian M A Sumanthiran said in a press statement.

He said those attacks had taken place during curfew thereby exposing the failure of security forces to stop such attacks.

He also cautioned that the people might be forced to defend themselves if they felt that the government and the security forces were unwilling or failing to prevent such incidents.

"Do not let another community in Sri Lanka feel that in order to survive in this country, it must fight for itself," the TNA Spokesman said.

Meanwhile, Police yesterday arrested Operation Director of the Anti-Corruption Front organization, Namal Kumara and leader of the Mahason Balakaya Amith Weerasinghe.

Police said that Namal Kumara had been arrested by the Colombo Crimes Division for alleged links to tense situations that arose on Sunday and Monday.

He was arrested when he arrived at the Warakapolia Police to lodge a complaint.

Amith Weerasinghe was arrested in the Theldeniya area.
