Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe is expected to be the UNP’s presidential candidate, a senior Cabinet Minister said.

"The premier is tipped to be the party’s nominee to contest the upcoming presidential election", says Minister Lakshman Kiriella.

He was reponding to a question by a journalist during the ‘Haritha Udarata Bakmaha Ulela 2019’ held with the participation of all 13 electorates of Kandy district, at Gatambe Grounds, Kandy, last week.

Asked for his views on recent media reports on establishing a new government, the Minister replied: "We don’t have an idea of establishing a new government. 113 seats in Parliament are necessary to establish a government. If this is disregarded, they may face the same outcome as MP Mahinda Rajapaksa. These reports are inaccurate, and have been fabricated by a section of the media".

On UNP’s preparation for the election, Minister Kiriella noted that the UNP does not belong to a single family. However, the candidate for the opposing side is decided by the family - the former President, his wife, the three brothers and the son. This is family bandyism. The UNP is different as it’s a people’s party.

"We select a candidate by convening the Working Committee and parliamentarians. Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe is the incumbent leader of our party. Therefore, we expect that he will contest in the upcoming presidential election. The so-called candidate from the ‘Pohottuwa’ party is facing international lawsuits. We are embarrassed to mention this. If someone from our government committed such an offence, we will not allow them to remain within our fold".
