Rain in catchment areas but inadequate to end power crisis

Rain experienced in the major catchment areas on Thursday-Friday offered a degree of hope of ending the power crisis, but ministry officials expressed disappointment over the low intensity of the showers, which, they said, was "grossly inadequate to make a positive impact on the overall ground situation".

During the period 6.00 am on Wednesday to 6.00 am on Thursday, Castleriegh received the highest rainfall of 41mm, followed by Kotmale 32.6mm and Canyon 29.5mm.

The other catchment areas, where rain was received during the period under review were: Maussakele 10.6mm, Victoria 12.7mm, Norton 9.2mm, Laxapana 18.5mm, Kukuleganga 10mm and Upper Kotmale 5mm.

There was no rain in the Randenigala and Samanalawewa reservoir areas.

With insufficient rain, there’s still no improvement in the water levels for hydro power generation, says Sulakshana Jayawardena, spokesman for the Power and Energy Ministry.

The Met. Department predicted showers or thundershowers in several areas in Central, Sabaragamuwa, Southern, Uva, North-western, Western and North-Central provinces and Ampara and Batticaloa districts.

Fairly heavy falls about 75 mm can be expected at some places in Sabaragamuwa, Central, Uva and Southern provinces and in Kalutara district and severe lightning activities are also possible in those areas, the forecast said.

Misty conditions can be expected at some places in Western, Sabaragamuwa and Central provinces during the morning, the department predicted.

There may be temporary localized strong winds during thundershowers, the forecast further noted, while advising the public to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by lightning activity. Q
