Sanjaya takes five wickets as Australia U19s declare

Tissa Central, Kalutara spinner Rohan Sanjaya came up with a five wicket haul to control Australia Under-19s on day one of the three-day Youth match which commenced at SSC Grounds on Thursday.

The visitors posted 269 for nine wickets declared after the left arm spinner did most of the damage on day one. Deciding to bat first Australia lost just one wicket during the first session and looked set to go for a big score as they took lunch on 75.

The second wicket pair remained unbeaten for Australia to reach three figure mark for the loss of just one wicket. But Sanjaya delivered decisive blows after lunch for the hosts to take control. He took the wickets of Keegan Oates, Corey Hunter and Oliver Davies in a crucial spell and within a phase of seven overs.

Richmond spinner Sandun Mendis who bowled in tandem with him was economical and took the wicket of Australian skipper Baxter Holt. Holt was repairing the damage caused by Sanjaya with a knock of 60 runs when Mendis had him leg before wicket.

While Jaffna Central spinner Vijayakanth Viyaskanth took one wicket. Sanjaya later picked up two more wickets to complete a five wicket haul.

Trinity’s Ruwin Peiris was the only successful bowler during the first session and he ended up with two wickets. Nalanda’s Chamindu Wijesinghe bowled a tight spell in the morning but was unlucky not to get a wicket.

In reply openers, Royal’s Kamil Mishara and Richmond’s Thaveesha Abishek negotiated five overs to reach 20 runs at stumps without being parted.

For Australia Corey Hunter and skipper Holt scored half centuries.
