Akila accuses President of being ungrateful

President Maithripala Sirisena had been attempting to weaken the UNP as soon as he became President although it was the UNPers who had helped him secure the presidency, UNP General Secretary Akila Viraj Kariyawasam said yesterday, addressing party supporters at Siri Kotha.

"Although President Maithripala Sirisena told UNP supporters not to hate him and that it was the UNP leadership that had weakened the party, everyone knows the truth. "When the President removed Ranil Wickremesinghe from the post of prime minister and attempted to install an illegal government in an authoritarian manner, many UNPers rose in protest.

UNPers volunteered to protect the party, democracy and the country. I am eternally grateful for this," he said.

After the unconstitutional actions of the President many UNPers rallied behind the party. "During the last few years, the President placed obstructed our initiatives that would have benefited the people. He was afraid that the UNP would win over the people. For example he stopped the Sasunodaya initiative that I started to rehabilitate 12,000 temples," he said.

Kariyawasam said that the UNP would continue to link with organidations and individuals who are keen on the rule of law, democracy and justice.
