Last of the Mahaweli projects to be completed by January

Mahaweli Authority officials said yesterday filling of the Kaluganga reservoir of Moragahakanda-Kaluganga irrigation project, the last of the Mahaweli schemes was at a satisfactory level.

The filling of the reservoir was inaugurated under the auspices of President Maithripala Sirisena in July.

They said by next January the job would be completed and it would enable to supply water to irrigate paddy fields during the periods with less rain.

The President visited the Mahaweli Authority on an inspection tour yesterday.

Under the Moragahakanda Project, fresh water fish farming, generation of power, tourism etc., have been commenced.

The President inquired from officials about the progress of development of Laggala new town, Sri Lanka’s first environmental and technical park, Special Environmental Zones and cultivation projects.

President Sirisena emphasised the need to expedite the releasing of lands in the Mahaweli Zones.
