Thanking all those who had resisted attempts by President Maithripala Sirisena to subvert the democratic process over the last 13-days , Wickremesinghe who insists that he is still the legitimate Prime Minister , yesterday called on the people to join hands to prevent a corrupt dictatorship taking root in the country.

He said that it was heartening to see the general public protesting on the streets, demanding that their constitutional and basic rights, including human freedoms be restored .

"You have faced intimidation , threats and attacks courageously, in the fight against President Srisena , who 13-days ago prorogued Parliament and established an illegal government, with total disregard for the Constitution" , he noted adding that the peoples voice had been heard loud and clear and it was a matter of time before democracy and the rule of law prevailed.

Wickremesinghe expressed confidence that the ongoing campaign to free the country from the darkness that had dawned 13 days ago, due to the President’s dictatorial actions ,would succeed with the assistance of all law abiding political parties , their leaders and the general public.

"Come all,to join hands in this noble task. I thank you from the bottom of my heart " , he added.
