CID tells court report on Vijayakala’s statement handed over to AG

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) yesterday informed Colombo Chief Magistrate Ranga Dissanayake that investigations into a public statement made by former State Minister Vijayakala Maheshwaran (UNP) allegedly promoting the LTTEā€ˆhad been completed. It had been submitted to the Attorney General for investigation and report, the court was told.


The Chief Magistrate ordered the CID to report to the court about the response that will be given by the Attorney General.


Vijayakala Maheshwaran had allegedly said at a public event in Jaffna, that the revival of the LTTE was needed to upkeep the interests of the Tamils. The LTTE is a proscribed terrorist group.


The CID informed the Chief Magistrate that statements had been recorded from 59 public officers, who had attended the event, where Vijayakala had made the statement. These public officers included parliamentarians and government servants serving in the area.
