Parents blamed for children getting addicted to heroin

Leader of the House and Public Enterprise and Kandy City Development Minister Lakshman Kiriella yesterday alleged that many children had been driven to heroin by their parents.

Kiriella said that as he had appeared for many children arrested over narcotics offences in the Kandy court over a period of 25 years, he was aware how parents influenced their children. In fact, the parents’ culpability was the common factor, the Minister said, urging the parents to be vigilant.

The UNP Minister said so, addressing the inauguration of special presidential initiative in Kandy to address the narcotics issue.

Kiriella said that the Cabinet had also discussed the requirement to further strengthen laws to curb heroin trade and if necessary resume judicial executions.
