Ex-SriLankan Chairman’s drivers OT exceeded Rs. 50,000 per month – witness

SriLankan Airlines Secretary Dalreen Tirukumar, giving evidence before the Presidential Commission of inquiry probing SriLankan Airlines, SriLankan Catering and Mihin Lanka, yesterday, said the drivers assigned to SriLankan Airlines former Chairman Nishantha Wickramasinghe had been paid excessive overtime and often their overtime exceeded Rs. 50,000 a month.

She was cross examined by Additional Solicitor General Neil Unambuwa.

Tirukumar told the Commission that one of the drivers overtime had amounted to Rs. 138,825 in June 2012 and according to the overtime payment mode of the company, the particular driver claimed to have worked 23.4 hours a day.

She said the overtime was calculated by her.

ASG Unambuwa said that the particular driver had continuously worked even without sleeping and the members of the Commission expressed their dismay.

Tirukumar submitted to the Commission salary particulars and overtime details of three drivers assigned to Nishantha Wickremasinghe and told the Commission that she did not possess the details of vehicle movements.

She also submitted to the Commission documents pertaining to expenditure of the former SLA Chairman and they were marked as documents belonging to the Commission.

The Commission is chaired by former Supreme Court Justice Anil Gooneratne.
