Emerging athletics sensation Aruna Dharshana cleared the first hurdle on his way to a probable history-making podium finish when he won his 400 metres heat on day two of the IAAF World Under-20 Championship in Tampere, Finland on Wednesday.


Competing in lane eight, the Weera Keppetipola MV, Akuramboda sprinter returned a time of 46.81 seconds to win his heat (3rd heat) in comprehensive ease.


The Asian Athletics Championship record holder in the 400 metres, Dharshana was the only athlete to clock sub 47 seconds in his heat as Brazil’s Bruno Silva and Italy’s Klaudio Gjetja finished in 47.05 seconds and 47.09 seconds respectively to qualify for today’s semi-finals behind him.


Of the 24 athletes who qualified for three three semi finals his was the sixth fastest time.


He is drawn in the third semi-final alongside the fastest of the field Christopher Taylor of Jamaica, Canada’s Khamal Stewart-Baynes and USA’s Howard Fields.


Meanwhile, Swarnamali Balika, Kandy sprinter Amasha de Silva qualified for the semi-finals with a 11.75 second finish in the women’s 100 metres dash.


She was placed fifth in her heat but managed to obtain a place in the semi final due to her timing.


Only the first four finishers in each heat and the best four from the rest of the athletes were selected for the women’s 100 metres semi-finals which will also be held today.
