Should we hang them?

We believe the government’s decision to introduce the death penalty for drug smugglers will be welcomed by a large majority. At the rate the smuggling of this dreaded commodity is detected on arrival at the Customs every day is alarming. Every single attempt that escapes detection plays havoc among our young generation and creating an expansion among drug users. Thirty-two countries in Asia and Middle East carry the death penalty for drug smuggling. During this year, Indonesia executed eight convicted drug traffickers. Seven of the eight were foreigners, two Australians, one Brazilians and four Nigerians. We also have on record that drug offenders are routinely executed in China, Iran, Vietnam, Malaysia, Singapore and Middle Eastern countries.

Most drugs affect the brain's "reward circuit," causing euphoria as well as flooding it with the chemical messenger dopamine. A properly functioning reward system motivates a person to repeat behaviours needed to thrive, such as eating and spending time with loved ones. Surges of dopamine in the reward circuit, cause the reinforcement of pleasurable but unhealthy behaviours like taking drugs, leading people to repeat the behavior again and again.

As a person continues to use drugs, the brain adapts by reducing the ability of cells in the reward circuit to respond to it. This reduces the high that the person feels, compared to the high they felt when first taking the drug — an effect known as tolerance. They might take more of the drug to try to achieve the same high. These brain adaptations often lead to the person becoming less and less able to derive pleasure from other things they once enjoyed, like food, sex, or social activities. Long-term use also causes changes in other brain chemical systems and circuits as well, affecting functions that include learning, judgment, decision-making, stress, memory and behaviour. Despite being aware of these harmful outcomes, many people who use drugs continue to take them, which is the nature of addiction.

I can recall many violent incidents created by those addicted by drugs in the Middle East. In a gruesome incident, the son who failed to get money from his father to buy drugs killed his own father and set fire to his vehicle along with him. Even in our country, many of the petty thefts are related to drug addicts who run short of money to carry on their addiction. So, who are the people at the bottom of it all? The drug dealers! The death penalty for ruining our society was long overdue and we firmly believe the right-thinking people will support the decision to reintroduce the capital punishment with its full meaning – we mean to hang them.
