KANDY: Kandy Mayor Kesara D. Senanayake has warned those responsible for visual pollution in the sacred city of stern action.

Senanayake told the Kandy World Heritage City Committee meeting, on Tuesday, that billboards and posters in undesignated places would be removed and legal action taken against those who put them up. He said congestion had become a huge problem and there was no space for green lungs. Air pollution had taken a turn for the worse.

Some people had got building plans, rejected by the KMC, approved by higher authorities in Colombo and constructed buildings in the sacred city, the Mayor said.

The Mayor urged all those who were keen to preserve the cultural heritage of the Hill Capital to cooperate with the municipal council and other authorities to protect the environment and preserve the beauty of the heritage city.

Former Mayor and present leader of the Opposition Sena Dissanayake, Deputy Mayor T. Ilahi Abdeen, Mohan Abdeen and Kandy Municipal Commissioner Chandana Tennakoon were among those who spoke at the meeting.
