After losing twice in the league competition, CR & FC produced a fascinating performance in their Dialog Clifford Cup quarter-final fixture against arch-rivals, CH & FC to record a 46-29 victory at Race Course International Stadium, Colombo yesterday.

A total of 11 tries were scored by both teams – 4 for CH & FC and 7 for CR & FC along with one penalty each as the winners led 22-15 at half-time.

The CH lads led by Rohitha Rajapaksa came into the game as favourites and they got off to a stunning start when winger Anuradha Herath scored an early try.

Joel Perera scored the first try for CR & FC in the 8th minute followed by two quick tries by their wing-three quarter Reeza Rafaideen and captain Kavindu Perera.

Gayan Dilshan joined the try-scoring spree as scores read 22-07 with little over 20 minutes completed in the game.

Fly-half Samuel Maduwantha slotted over a penalty while Herath scored his second try as CH & FC reduced the deficit to 7 points at the half-way mark.

After the breather, CR got the first points when Omalka Gunaratne barged over for a fascinating try followed by a penalty kick by Tarinda Ratwatte which crossed the uprights with ease.

Number-eight Sudarshana Muthuthanthri kept CH hopes alive when he scored a try from the back of a maul as the final quarter approached.

CH & FC made plenty of unforced errors whereas CR easily punished those mistakes as Chanaka Chandimal scored two tries in no time to put the ‘Reds’ in a commanding position.

Muthuthanthri scored the final try of the match, a consolation one for the losing team as CR got their revenge for the two losses they suffered in the league tournament.

With this victory, CR & FC booked their place in the semi-finals against Kandy SC next Thursday in Pallekelle.
