Deterrent penalties proposed against increased cigarette smuggling

As the number of people attempting to smuggle in tobacco products increase, Sri Lanka Customs is mulling the possibility of increasing the penalty imposed on smuggling such products, acting customs spokesperson Vipula Minuwanpitiya said.

He said at present those who attempted to smuggle in tobacco products were warned and the items were confiscated.

However as the number of those who smuggle in tobacco increased, the Customs was thinking about fining such persons or jailing them, Minuwanpitiya said.

Yesterday three persons who attempted to smuggle in 41,040 cigarettes, valued at Rs 2 million, were apprehended at the airport. The stock of cigarettes was confiscated and the three were released after receiving a strong warning. (RK)
