SJGH nurses strike ends

By Dilanthi Jayamanne

The nurses’ strike at Sri Jayewadenepura General Hospital against the biometric attendance system ended yesterday morning following discussions between the Hospital Administration and the Public Service United Nurses Union (PSUNU).

Medical Director of the PSUNU, Dr Susith Senaratne, said the Hospital Chairman, Dr Athula Kahandaliyanage and other hospital administrators had held another round of talks with the striking union and sorted out the issue.

The PSUNU headed by Ven. Muruttetuwe Ananda Thera and his ex-co members, who met the hospital management requested that the new system be suspended pending talks on what they called some practical problems.

The Medical Director said there had also been a request that no deduction be made for the duration of the strike. However, it had been pointed out that there was a District Court Interim order against the strike. Therefore, the matter would have to be settled in court.

The union leaders also requested that the trade unionists who provided active leadership to the strike not be harassed and the hospital management agreed to grant that request.

The nurses resumed work yesterday evening.
