The Court of Appeal, yesterday, fixed for inquiring on May 10, the application for contempt of Court, against Dr. Anuruddha Padeniya, President of the Government Medical Officers’ Association. He pleaded not guilty to the charge of contempt of court and consequently the court fixed the contempt of court application for inquiry.

Counsel for Dr. Padeniya, Counsel Gamini Marapana, PC took up the preliminary objection that the earlier bench of the Court of Appeal, before whom the application was called, had pre-judged him by ordering Dr. Padeniya to show cause as to why he should not be punished for contempt of court. The court overruled the preliminary objection and fixed the contempt of court application for May 10, 2018.

Two petitioner Gamini Viyangoda and Prof. Sarath Wijesuriya have complained that Dr. Padeniya, insulted the dignity of the Court at a public rally, in Colombo when he referred to a Court of Appeal ruling on January 31, 2017.

That ruling ordered the Sri Lanka Medical Council to provisionally register the SITAM medical graduates as Medical Officers of the state.

The bench comprised, Justice L.T.B. Dehideniya President and Justice Shiran Guneratne.
