Avant Garde sues navy for Rs. 2.4 bn

Avant Garde Maritime Services Private Ltd has filed an application in the District Court of Colombo, complaining that, the Sri Lanka Navy had forcibly taken possession of the arms belonging to the plaintiff when the vessel was anchored off the Port of Galle.

The date of the unlawful act is stated as November 13, 2015. The Avant Garde has said it was warding off piracy in the seas off Sri Lanka. The loss caused to the plaintiff by the unlawful act has been estimated at Rs. 2, 400,000,000.

The plaintiff has claimed compensation amounting upto that amount payable by the Sri Lanka Navy.

Among the respondents are the Attorney General and the Commander of the Sri Lanka Navy.

The bench comprised Justice L. T. B. Dehideniya (President Court of Appeal) and Justice Shiran Gooneratne.
