Chairman of National Election Commission Mahinda Deshapriya yesterday told The Island that he would discuss Shalila Moonasinghe’s matter with other members of the NEC, N. J. Abeysekera, PC and Prof. Ratnajeevan Hoole soon.

Deshapriya said he, too, had been surprised when he first heard that the New Democratic Front (NDF) Leader Moonasinghe was a foreign passport holder.Moonasinghe has been remanded till Oct. 25 pending investigations into alleged theft of millions of USD from Taiwan’s Far Eastern International Bank.

Maithripala Sirisena contested the last presidential election in January 2015 on the NDF ticket under swan symbol.

Responding to a query, Deshapriya acknowledged that a review in respect of registration of political parties was necessary, especially in the wake of 19 Amendment to the Constitution that had barred those with dual citizenship from contesting parliamentary polls.

Deshapriya said that a fresh review of the whole process was required and decisions could be made following NEC meet on Oct 19.

Answering another question, Deshapriya said that though those with dual citizenship couldn’t contest parliamentary polls, no such restriction was in place in respect of nominations for local government polls and Provincial Council polls (SF)
