Priyadharshani who won Gold at Asian Masters C’ships in China

Priyadharshani Maithreerathna won gold in China yet she struggles to find sponsorship to participate in the World Masters Championship in Spain next year.

M. A. Priyadharshani Maithreerathna, a Prison Officer attached to Welikada Prison and an old girl of Bodhiraja Maha Vidyalaya, Ovitigama, Pugoda, and Rajasingha Central College of Hanwella, is the victorious sprinter winning two Gold medals at the recently concluded Asian Masters Championships in China.

She has been a dazzling athlete as a schoolgirl. She was awarded the title as the most eminent female Prison Officer for her services in the Department of Prison.

She took part in inter-departmental athletic meets and international meets held in India, Thailand, Malaysia, Japan, France and many other countries without any sponsorship, under difficult circumstances but endeavoured to obtain many Gold, Silver and Bronze medals.

Due to her outstanding performances, Priyadharshani was invited to participate at the 20th Asian Masters Athletic Championship which was held on the 24th to 28th of September 2017 at Rugao in China, where she became 1st and won a Gold medal in 400-meter hurdles in Under-45 to 50 age group event with a record-breaking feat; she shattered an Asian record that had been set before 19 years by a Japanese, in the year of 1998.

Priyadharshani reached this far without proper coaching facilities or a support of a sponsor. She was assisted only by the Superintendent of Prison, Chandana Ekanayake in her athletics career.

Even though she is now qualified to participate in the World Masters Championship, to be held in 2018 in Spain, she is hesitant to take part in it due to lack of sponsorship.

Therefore, it is time for a benevolent sponsor to assist Priyadharshani Maithreerathna, this gritty female athlete with an Asian record in 400m hurdles, at this moment of need, as she can bring glory to the country in many an international event in future.
